Where Do I Go From Here?

What are Hearing Loss and Deafness?

Basic information

Hearing loss may vary from slight loss to complete deafness. Besides the use of hearing aid, some individuals find alternative ways to communicate through sign language, lip reading or a combination of both.  This may sometimes cause frustration, anger and depression.

Assessment

Before entering school, students with hearing loss or deafness undergo an audiological assessment to identify their impairment. To facilitate the learning process and determine the child’s level of abilities and skills, standardized tests, curriculum-based assessment and observation report are also used.

Some teaching suggestions

  • Find numerous ways to communicate including visual representations (i.e. drawing, computer)
  • Learn and use the student’s best means of communication
