What is Mental Illness?
Basic information
Mental illness is sometimes used as an umbrella term for illnesses that affect the way the brain functions. Behavioral needs/ mental illnesses affect thoughts, behaviors, emotions, as well as the ability to understand information in the manner intended. Mental illnesses are not what most of us experience on a daily basis; to some they make life very difficult to the extent that some may be disabling. Such illnesses may be improved but not cured whereas others may be treated and cured; the severity varies. Mental illnesses usually arise from trauma, problems in the brain, chronic thinking patters or emotional disturbances. Besides treatment, some people can be helped by nourished love, concern and support. |

Assessment processes for children with mental illnesses are conducted in an attempt to find the child’s strengths and weaknesses. Such information can be conducted through play, observation, academics and mental health screening tools.
